What Are the Top 9 Food Allergens? A Parent’s Guide
If your child has been diagnosed with a food allergy, or if you're just beginning your journey, knowing which foods are most likely to trigger a reaction is an important first step.
The FDA has identified the following as the Top 9 food allergens in the United States:
Peanuts
Tree Nuts (e.g., almonds, walnuts, cashews)
Milk
Eggs
Wheat
Soy
Fish
Shellfish
Sesame (added to the official list in 2023)
These nine foods are responsible for the majority of food allergy reactions in children and adults.
Why These Foods?
Each of these contains proteins that are more likely to trigger an immune system response in people with allergies, ranging from mild skin reactions to life-threatening anaphylaxis.
As a nurse practitioner and food allergy parent, I’ve seen firsthand how scary it can be when these foods are involved. The key is being informed, prepared, and supported.
