Traveling with a child who has a severe food allergy can feel overwhelming, but with preparation and the right support, it can also be empowering.

Here are my top 3 tips for a safe air travel:

1. Communicate Early: I called the airline ahead of our trip to share our situation and discuss their food allergy protocols. Under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA), food allergies are recognized as a disability. This mandates that U.S. airlines provide reasonable accommodations to ensure safe travel for individuals with severe allergies. In our situation, they upgraded our tickets to priority boarding, giving us extra time to wipe down our seats, tray tables, armrests, windows, and shades – every spot a curious toddler might touch. Do your research ahead of time and make sure you choose an airline you are comfortable with.

2. Advocate Onboard: When we boarded, I informed the flight attendant about my child’s peanut allergy so we could be safe in the air. She kindly showed me the planned snacks, and after learning they were processed in a facility with peanuts, she quickly swapped them for a peanut-free option. Although the airline does not serve our allergen on board, snacks may still be made in facilities with allergens. The flight attendant even made a heartfelt announcement asking passengers to avoid eating all nuts during the flight. Most airlines do not serve peanuts but this does not mean that will guarantee a peanut free flight environment.

On another flight, we faced a more challenging situation. A passenger seated directly in front of my food allergy child opened a large bag of peanut M&Ms. Given the risk of accidental exposure from seat backs, dropped pieces, or even airborne particles, I kindly approached the passenger and explained our situation. To my relief, they were incredibly understanding and immediately put the snack away, showing the power of compassionate communication. Don’t be afraid to speak up.

3. Pack the essentials plus an anxiety check: Traveling with a child who has a severe food allergy can be stressful, but having a support person with you can make a big difference. The anxiety is real, but refocusing, being prepared, and staying vigilant are essential ways to ground yourself during the journey.
